Many people experience neck pain frequently. This happens for numerous reasons, incorrect posture, and injuries to different parts of your neck including bones, vertebral joints, muscle and ligaments. It is a common health condition and one that can be treated with positive results.

In certain cases neck pain can be a symptom of a serious health risk. If experienced as sharp and sudden or dull and chronic pain you should see a doctor. You may feel a lasting stiffness of neck, muscle spasm, swelling, numbness, tingling sensation and even issues with balance. The pain can also radiate from the lower back, shoulders, arms or upper back.

What causes neck pain?

It’s usually caused by normal strains, sprains. However prolonged poor posture, nerve compression, infection, trauma and spinal tumours may also cause neck pain and need medical attention.

The condition can be diagnosed by a specialist at Montreal International Clinic through a clinical exam first and a diagnostic exam for confirmation. A CT scan and X-Ray may b required to identify the underlying cause. Dr Shatla will do a thorough analysis of your history, pain level, location and any other factors like tingling or radiating pain and strength of your neck muscles. Once the case is properly diagnosed, the treatment plan can be put in place.

How can you prevent neck pain from occurring?

  • You can do relaxation exercises to keep your neck from getting stiff
  • Maintaining correct posture if you sit at the computer for long hours. Take breaks in-between and stretch your neck muscles to keep them relaxed
  • Use a pillow to offer your neck some support
