Spinal Compression Fracture

Spinal compression fractures are small breaks in the bones that make up your spine when too much pressure is applied on them. This condition is also known as vertebral compression fractures. These can happen due to heavy lifting or accident. Usually, healthy bones can handle normal pressure. However, sometimes even a small load on the spine can result in spinal compression fractures if the bones are weakened due to obesity, improper lifting position, mild previous injury, incorrect posture or bone disease such as tumor or osteoporosis. The treatment for spinal fractures is a surgical procedure called spinal vertebropalsty using spinal instrumentation to regain the height of the fractured vertebra. A decompression laminectomy to decompress neural tissue

Compression fractures usually occur in the lower part of the spine but can occur at mid level as well. This can be a painful condition that requires patients to seek medical advice and treatment. If not treated properly, the lack of bone stability and healing can lead to damage of the spinal cord or nerves. And in the long run, such damage can lead to heart condition and lung problems.

Let's look at the common causes of spinal compression.

Osteoporosis

This is a condition that is a leading cause of stress fracture. The bones become brittle as they lose their density causing your spine to become easily fractured. It is a frequent bone disorder that occurs in women over the age of 50.

Did you know that bone tumours are another cause of spinal fracture? Bone tumours which result from multiple myeloma and metastatic cancer can weaken the bones and cause pressure on your spinal cord. This results in spinal fractures as well.
